THINGS TO DO

Aalkies Dream is located in Swellendam, which in turn, is situated on the Garden Route, half way between Cape Town and George. Though it’s a fairly quiet town there are many things to do in and around Swellendam  during your stay with us. Here are some of our recommended places to visit:

Masbiekers Valley Project

Conveniently located just across the street from Aalkies Dream, take a relaxing 2km Nature walk. Click on the link above to see the other activities happening at Masbiekers and feel free to donate and help the Project.

 

Duiwelsbos – Marloth Nature Reserve

A short 4km drive will get you to the foot of the Duiwelsbos Hiking trail (into the Langeberg mountain). The hike is a 2 Km trail up and down the same route, with a total elevation of 250m. The trip should take around 1.5 hours to complete. At the top of the trail is a lovely little waterfall and a small water pool you can cool off before taking the trek back down.

 

Swellendam’s Fairy Sanctuary 

For all things mythical, magical and wonderful, Tucked on a side road in Swellendam this mystical garden is home to many enchanting faerie folk. Just a kilometer away from Aalkies Dream.

 

Wildebraam Berry Estate

Situated 2.4km away from Aalkies dream in the picturesque Hermitage Valley, with panoramic views of the Langeberg Mountains and berry orchards, Wildebraam Berry Estate (a Swellendam Berry Farm) stuns and delights visitors who come to enjoy the ‘Wildebraam Experience’: beautiful surroundings, friendly enthusiastic staff who eagerly share the intricacies of liqueur making and berry farming, and the opportunity to taste ten unique South African Liqueurs. From November to January picking your own youngberries and blackberries is and additional activity and the fun-filled Wildebraam Berry Festival takes place every year in early December. Owners Natalie and Martyn Turck have grown Wildebraam Berry Esate fron scratch in 1996 into Swellendam’s “BERRIED TREASURE” with an unwavering focus on quality and hospitality.

 

Drostdy Museum

The Drostdy was built by the Dutch East India Company in 1747 to serve as residence and official headquarters for the Landdrost. Soon after a gaol, a house for the secretary, a mill and various outbuildings were erected. Visit this lovely little museum located 1.9km’s away from Aalkies Dream.

 

Swellendam Dutch Reformed Church

Visit this lovely big famous Swellendam church located 1.2Km’s from Aalkies Dream.

Barrydale

Take the unforgettable 40 minute  journey through the Tradouws Pass to Barrydale. Have the best milkshake and breakfast this little town has to offer at the Diesel and Crème Vintage Diner.

 

Montagu 

Visit this lovely town 55Km’s away from Aalkies Dream and buy the freshest dried fruit and the best wines. 

  

Cape Agulhas 

A bit further out, 11Km’s from Aalkies Dream, visit  the most southern tip of Africa, and visit the souvenirs shop

(Potpouri) , enjoy the Cape Agulhas Light house museum 

 

Struisbay harbour and take the best photos with the

fisherboats, then visit Arniston, a beautiful seeside.
